A truck driver on a Utah freeway narrowly escaped being struck by lightning earlier this week. According to video captured by a motorist's dashcam, a lightning strike hit Interstate 84, near the mouth of Weber Canyon, just feet away from a moving truck on Tuesday night.
The driver, Tucker Ralphs, was commuting home when he captured the incident on his dashcam. In an interview, Ralphs described the experience, saying "Lightning struck the edge of the freeway feet from a truck just ahead of me." He added that the sound was "louder than you can imagine, with a very sharp 'crack' and 'boom.'"
The National Weather Service confirmed that the area experienced a thunderstorm, with data showing a lightning strike hit the side of the freeway at about 9 p.m. local time.
Ralphs' close call serves as a reminder of the dangers of lightning strikes. According to reports, a 20-year-old man from Michigan died earlier this month after being apparently struck by lightning while walking in Florida.
