Zach Ertz has rejoined the Philadelphia Eagles, signing with the team's practice squad on Monday. The 35-year-old tight end, a Super Bowl LII hero, returns to the Eagles after starting tight end Dallas Goedert suffered a sprained MCL in Sunday's 24-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
Ertz's return is a response to immediate needs on the Eagles' offense, which was already thin at tight end. Goedert is expected to miss several weeks, leaving backup tight ends Eli Stowers and Grant Calcaterra sidelined due to injuries. Developmental tight end E.J. Jenkins and practice squad veteran Joshua Deguara were the only healthy targets remaining for quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Ertz spent nine seasons with the Eagles before leaving the team in 2021. During his time with the Eagles, he accumulated 579 catches, placing him second in franchise history. He needs just 11 more receptions to pass Harold Carmichael's record of 589 and become the Eagles' all-time leader in catches.
Ertz has been out of the league for two seasons, spending time with the Washington Commanders. In 13 games last season, he recorded 50 receptions for 504 yards and three touchdowns before a knee injury ended his year.
The Eagles' signing of Ertz to their practice squad gives him time to get back into condition before potentially being elevated to the 53-man active roster.
