A police response to a report of a man chasing a woman in a crowded seaside park in California turned deadly when an unrelated knife-wielding man charged an officer.

The incident occurred on August 22 in Santa Monica's Palisades Park, a popular oceanfront destination. Two uniformed officers responded to a report of a man chasing a woman near the Broadway stairs, but their investigation was quickly complicated by the arrival of a third individual, Michael Rodriguez, 44, who was holding a large knife above his head.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, Rodriguez, who was unrelated to the original call, ignored repeated warnings from the officer to drop the knife. The officer, who was backed away by bystanders, fired one round from his department-issued firearm, striking Rodriguez in the chest.

Bodycam footage shows Rodriguez falling to the ground as the knife drops from his hand. The officers immediately called for backup and requested emergency medical personnel. As police approached Rodriguez and checked him for additional weapons, they discovered a second knife in his right pants pocket and the handle of a third knife sticking out of his backpack.

Rodriguez was pronounced dead in the emergency room at approximately 1:49 p.m. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide, caused by a gunshot wound to the chest. The case remains open, and the Santa Monica Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting, while the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will separately review the officer's use of deadly force.

Santa Monica Police Chief Darrick Jacob released the bodycam video and accompanying critical incident briefing, stating that any loss of life is tragic and that the department's responsibility to provide a clear and open account of the incident is especially important in such cases.
