Alex James Barnett arrested after SWAT standoff in Tucson shooting

A suspect in the killing of a Tucson police cadet has been captured after a five-day manhunt. Alex James Barnett, 33, was found hiding in an apartment complex near East Broadway Boulevard and South Camino Seco on Monday evening, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Barnett was arrested after a three-hour standoff with county SWAT officers, with no one else injured in the incident. He is being held without bail at the Pima County jail, along with a second suspect, Santiago Jorge Rogers, 39, who was arrested at a hotel near the Tucson International Airport on Saturday.

The arrest comes after the shooting death of 23-year-old Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez, who was killed in a home invasion at his residence in southwestern Tucson on Wednesday morning. His fiancée, a corrections officer in Pima County, was hospitalized in stable condition following the attack.

According to court records, Barnett has a prior record that includes convictions for burglary and weapons offenses, as well as a guilty plea to an unlawful imprisonment charge in December 2024. A search of Pima County courts found no prior cases for Rogers, but a man of the same name and age has a history of convictions in Yavapai, Navajo, and Graham counties.

Surveillance video shows men identified as Rogers and Barnett in black clothing at a gas station convenience store about 20 minutes before the shooting. A third man linked to the suspect vehicle has also been contacted by authorities, but no arrest has been made as investigators continue to determine his involvement in the case.
