Steak 'n Shake has announced that it is removing seed oils from its buns, effective immediately. According to a post on the social media platform X, all Steak 'n Shake buns are now free of seed oils and are instead topped with pure Grade AA Wisconsin butter.
This change is part of the chain's ongoing efforts to revamp its ingredients and align itself with the MAHA movement. Steak 'n Shake has made several recent changes to its menu, including switching to grass-fed beef and frying chicken tenders, onion rings, and tots in 100% beef tallow.
The company's chief MAHA officer, Michael Boes, has stated that he believes real ingredients taste better than synthetic additives. Steak 'n Shake has dedicated a page on its website to its transition away from seed oils and its efforts to provide more natural ingredients.
Reaction to the news has been largely positive, with some social media users praising the chain for listening to consumer concerns. U.S. Representative Nancy Mace, R-S.C., commented "MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN" on X, while other users expressed gratitude for the change.
Seed oils, which are plant-based cooking oils commonly used in processed and packaged foods, have been a topic of debate in the food and nutrition landscape. While some health agencies have stated that seed oils are not inherently bad, others have raised concerns about their potential health effects.
