The Tunnel to Towers Steel Across America tour made a stop in Boston's Fenway Park on Wednesday night, bringing a preserved section of the World Trade Center to Red Sox fans. The 21-foot steel beam, from the South Tower of the World Trade Center, has been on a tour across America since May and is scheduled to conclude its journey in New York City just after the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The display at Fenway Park was met with emotional reactions from some attendees. David Littlefield, a Fenway vendor, said that seeing the beam brought up memories and gave him chills. He noted that his wife had lost a roommate in the attacks and that the display hit close to home. Another woman at the game, who had worked for American Airlines, said that the display was "gut wrenching" and "heartbreaking" because of her own personal connection to the tragedy.
The steel beam will next be featured at the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial on Thursday before heading to Washington, D.C. for a private event on Friday. It will then be displayed in Brooklyn on September 11, before a final appearance at the New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys game at MetLife Stadium on September 13.
The tour has previously stopped at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where the superintendent, Lt. Gen. James B. Bartholomees III, noted that the steel beam serves as a reminder of the courage shown by first responders on 9/11 and the Americans who answered the call to serve in the years that followed.
