House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., engaged in a heated exchange with ABC's "This Week" host Jon Karl on Sunday. The discussion began when Emmer expressed his party's agreement on the need to address high gas prices, stating that $4 gas and $6 diesel were "entirely unacceptable." He then went on to say that voting for candidates who are "communists" would not be sufficient to address the issue.
Karl responded by saying that most Democrats would not identify as communists, and that there aren't many communists on the ballot in the midterm elections. However, Emmer disagreed, insisting that the Democratic Party has moved further to the left and that some candidates are indeed communists.
Emmer pointed to the platform of the Democratic Socialists of America, which he claimed advocates for policies that are "toxic" to the country. He specifically mentioned the party's stances on defunding the police, government-only health care, and the Green New Deal, which he estimated would cost every American family $355,000.
The exchange also touched on Emmer's criticism of the mainstream media for reporting on inflation and gas prices differently under President Joe Biden than they did under President Donald Trump. He claimed that the media has failed to report on the improvements in gas prices and inflation under Trump, and that this has contributed to a lack of understanding among the American people.
Emmer's comments come as several Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates are running for office in the midterm elections.
