A supermarket manager in Puebla, Mexico, leapt into action on Sunday to save a 3-year-old girl who had wandered into the road. According to security footage, Luis Cruz, a manager at the Super King El Rey del Ahorro grocery store, sprinted after the girl and grabbed her while diving to the ground just moments before she would have been hit by an oncoming vehicle.
The girl had run out of the supermarket around 2 p.m. local time after slipping out of her mother's grip. A woman had initially chased after the child, but she slipped and fell before she could grab the girl. Cruz, who is a father himself, reportedly said he didn't think before taking action, but was driven by a paternal instinct.
Security footage shows Cruz tackling the girl to the ground just as a minivan crossed the lane she would have entered. As car horns honk, Cruz grabs the girl and pulls her backwards, and they both tumble safely to the ground in the lane closest to the store while the minivan screeches to a halt in the middle lane.
The grocery store awarded Cruz with 20,000 Mexican pesos, approximately $1,184, for his heroics. Cruz also reportedly urged parents to keep a watchful eye on their children.
