The Kennebunk Police Department is investigating a bomb threat that prompted an evacuation of Town Hall and its closure on Wednesday morning.
According to police, the assessor's office received an email alerting staff to a bomb threat as the building was opening. The Kennebunk Fire and Rescue Department, also located in the complex, received a similar warning. In response, town leaders alerted police, who evacuated the building and closed it for the day due to concerns about the safety of employees and the public.
Maine State Police and Maine Capitol Police explosive-detecting K-9 units were dispatched to the scene and conducted a search of the building. The search did not result in the discovery of any explosives.
As part of their investigation, Kennebunk police have also contacted the FBI's Portland office, which is assisting with the case due to concerns that the bomb threat may have originated outside of Maine.
The police department is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 207-985-6121 or leave a tip on their anonymous tip line by calling extension 1622.
