Chris Spatola, a college basketball TV analyst for ESPN, has passed away at the age of 47.
Before his career in broadcasting, Spatola was a standout player for the Army Black Knights, where he was a starting guard and led the team in scoring in three of his four seasons. He finished his college career with 1,543 points, placing him among the top 10 all-time scorers in Army's history.
After graduating from Army, Spatola served on active duty from 2002 to 2007, deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received several awards for his service, including the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Army Commendation Medal, which recognized his outstanding leadership.
Spatola later transitioned to a coaching career, serving as an assistant coach at Duke University from 2007 to 2012. During that time, the Blue Devils won the 2010 NCAA Division I men's basketball national championship, with Spatola on the coaching staff. He also worked as a court coach for the U.S. men's national basketball team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
ESPN released a statement in response to Spatola's passing, praising his unique perspective and dedication to the sport. "Chris Spatola brought a thoughtful, prepared, and passionate approach to ESPN's college basketball coverage," the network said.
