Police in Bend, Oregon, have identified the 36-year-old man who was credited with stopping a school shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday. Kaylub Giamanco, a carpenter and father of two, was hailed as a hero for intervening in the attack, which left three children and a teacher dead.

According to police, the shooting occurred when a 16-year-old suspect entered the school and began firing a shotgun. The suspect forced his way into the school by firing at locked doors and then proceeded to shoot multiple rounds inside the building. A witness who was driving by the school saw the suspect throw his gun over a fence and then climb the fence onto school property. The witness confronted the suspect, who then fired at the witness's truck, hitting it at least three times.

The witness, who was not injured by the gunfire, made the initial 911 call at 12:59 p.m. Giamanco, who was driving in the area, saw the suspect shoot at the truck and then went into the school parking lot. He saw the suspect shoot the glass panes on two double doors to get inside and then proceeded to the classroom where the shooting was taking place.

Giamanco grabbed a .40-caliber pistol he had in his car and entered the classroom, where he saw the suspect struggling with a teacher who had thrown her cellphone at and tackled the shooter. Giamanco shot the suspect multiple times, stopping the attack.

The victims of the shooting include three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, Meghan Lambert. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were transported to a hospital with critical and non-life-threatening injuries, respectively. The suspect, who was 16 years old, was also killed in the attack.

Police arrived at the school within minutes of the 911 call and found the suspect dead. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
