A child was bitten by an alligator while swimming in an off-limits nature preserve in Hernando County, Florida, on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred at Weeki Wachee Preserve, where a Facebook post from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a young swimmer suffered puncture wounds to the arm and leg.

The alligator involved in the attack is estimated to be between 9 and 12 feet long. According to officials, the victim and several others became isolated on a sandbar after the incident and were unable to safely return to the mainland. Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to the scene, along with the sheriff's office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Fire Rescue's Special Operations Marine Unit used an airboat to reach the group and provide medical care to the injured victim. The child was then transported to Bayonet Point Hospital for further treatment, where the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Christopher Gillette, owner of Bellowing Acres Animal Sanctuary in Interlachen, Florida, emphasized the importance of swimming only in designated areas, as the victim had done in this case. Gillette noted that Florida is home to approximately 1.3 million alligators and that swimming in areas where alligators are present can be particularly hazardous.

Gillette also pointed out that encounters between humans and alligators can often be avoided by changing behavior around alligator habitats. He stressed the need to avoid swimming in areas where alligators are known to be present, feeding them, or having children and pets near the water's edge.
