Iberian orca found with suspected shotgun wounds, Spain investigates

The world's oldest known Iberian orca, Toñi, has been found with multiple fresh wounds on her dorsal fin and back that conservationists believe were caused by shotgun pellets.

According to Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), the injuries were not visible in photographs taken just weeks earlier. The ministry learned of Toñi's condition on August 11, after receiving information from marine conservation group WeWhale, which operates in the area with government authorization.

Preliminary investigative proceedings have been opened to determine what happened and potentially identify those responsible. While Spanish authorities have not concluded that Toñi was shot, conservation groups WeWhale and Iberian Orca Guardians believe the appearance, number, and distribution of the wounds point to a shotgun discharge.

The groups say the injuries appeared suddenly, with at least 10 apparent pellet impacts on the left side of Toñi's dorsal fin. The fin has a rich blood supply and helps the animal regulate its body temperature, meaning the wounds could lead to tissue damage, swelling, or infection if not properly treated.

WeWhale will continue monitoring Toñi's physical condition and behavior as the government investigation moves forward. Authorities have not announced a suspect or identified anyone who may be responsible for the injuries, but Spanish law prohibits killing, capturing, pursuing, or disturbing protected species, with penalties of up to 2 million euros possible in cases of violations.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of Toñi, who is estimated to be around 60 years old.
