A 15-year-old boater was rescued alive on Monday after three individuals went missing earlier in the week. The teenager was found clinging to a capsized vessel off the coast of Alaska and was experiencing symptoms of hypothermia.
Rescue personnel located the survivor in the midst of a medical emergency. The Coast Guard said it was able to deploy a raft with survival equipment, which was also assisted by a good Samaritan vessel.
The two other mariners on the 18-foot fishing vessel were found dead after the vessel overturned about 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island. The Coast Guard initiated a search mission early Monday after receiving a notification from Alaska State Troopers that the boat was overdue.
The vessel was expected to return on Sunday at 3 a.m., but crews were unable to launch a rescue mission until Monday morning due to weather and poor visibility.
The survivor and the two deceased mariners were brought to Nome, Alaska, for further processing.
