The University Democrats at the University of Texas at Austin have announced an event featuring Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer known for his incendiary rhetoric and anti-capitalist views.
Piker's event, scheduled for September 30, is limited to UT Austin students, staff, and faculty and will include a Q&A session. According to the University Democrats, Piker will address a variety of topics, including immigration, genocide, and the future of the Democratic Party.
The event has drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle, with Texas lawmakers including Governor Greg Abbott, Senator Ted Cruz, and Representative Henry Cuellar condemning Piker's appearance. Cuellar wrote on X that Piker's history of making hateful comments about Jewish Americans, 9/11, and Hamas terrorism is "deeply concerning" and that Jewish students at UT should not feel targeted or unsafe on their own campus.
Senator Cruz stated that Piker's appearance at the event hosted by University Democrats is a statement about the status of the Democratic Party. Cruz's statement also highlighted Piker's history of making anti-American comments, including saying that America deserved 9/11.
The controversy over Piker's event reflects growing tension over his increasing prominence on the political stage. While some argue that he brings in younger voters, critics say his rhetoric goes too far.
In response to the criticism, Piker has pushed back, saying that the pressure campaign to cancel the event is a direct violation of the 1st amendment and that free speech must be protected.
