A runner in Anchorage, Alaska, was hospitalized after fending off a brown bear attack on a trail by using her bear spray.

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the incident occurred at Prospect Heights' Wolverine Bowl trail when the woman, who was running alone, encountered the bear. She managed to get away from the animal and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Biologists were sent to the site of the attack and collected samples, but no bears were seen in the area. The department has posted warning signs at the Prospect Heights trailhead and is advising hikers to exercise caution when using this trail.

The incident comes less than a month after another woman was mauled by a bear in Anchorage. In that case, the victim was walking with a friend and her three dogs in an unofficial trail near Chugach State Park when the bear approached. The area had dense vegetation, which created poor visibility and increased the risk of surprising wildlife.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is reminding hikers to be aware of their surroundings and take necessary precautions when hiking in bear country, including carrying a deterrent such as bear spray or a firearm, staying in groups, making noise to avoid surprising bears, and keeping pets on a leash.
