New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was removed from the game on a stretcher Thursday night after a collision with teammate Nolan McLean during a game against the Phillies at Citi Field.
The incident occurred in the top of the sixth inning when the Phillies' Justin Crawford grounded a slow roller up the first-base line. Young and McLean converged to field the ball, with Young diving towards the grounder and McLean attempting to jump over him. McLean's knee made contact with the side of Young's head, sending him face-down into the dirt.
Young lay motionless on the field for several moments before medical staff from the Mets dugout rushed onto the field to treat him. Trainers stabilized his neck and evaluated him before placing him on a stretcher. Young was able to raise his thumb in a thumbs-up gesture to the Citi Field crowd as he was driven off the field, prompting a supportive ovation from fans.
Mark Vientos replaced Young at first base when play resumed. The Mets have not yet released an official medical update regarding Young's status, with further details expected to be provided following complete hospital evaluations and concussion testing.
Young's injury occurred just hours after another MLB player, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays, was injured in a separate collision during a game.
